Lentil Sloppy Joes

Omg you guys!  Lentil Sloppy Joes!  Where have these been my whole life???  Seriously delish.  The first batch of lentil sloppy joes went so fast that I had to immediately make a second batch.  I got the idea when someone posted a picture of their dinner in the Facebook group I run.  The girl who posted said she made up the recipe in her head with no measurements.

So I searched Pinterest and found this recipe.  I made mine slightly different with a few less ingredients.  Trying to keep things simple.  I used lettuce wraps for my lentil sloppy joes, but you can also use burger buns if you prefer.  If you love lentils, you may also like my red lentil soup and my green lentil salad.

These healthy sloppy joes are vegan and gluten free.  Very easy and kid friendly too. You can eat them in a lettuce wrap like I have pictured, or you can serve them over a baked sweet potato.  I have also added avocado and vegan sour cream to this.  The sour cream is so good!

I filmed a short video for this recipe. You can view it below.  For more videos, you can subscribe to my You Tube channel.

  1. I love these! Especially the addition of coconut sugar - I have been feeling my red lentil experiments needed something to push the flavor a little bit and this will be the perfect addition! And serving them in lettuce wraps is a wonderful idea! Thanks for the inspiration :)
  2. Jamie Oliver has an excellent lentil sloppy joe recipe, too. The whole family loves them. Thanks for the reminder! I need to make that again!
  3. I made these for the first time last night. I used green lentils simply because it was what I had on hand. This was delicious! I will definitely be making this again. Thank you.
  4. Omg I made this for dinner tonight, they were a huge hit with the family. This will def work it's way into the rotation at our house
  5. I am 13. I made these for dinner and my parents loved it! We didn't have a lot of stuff so I just improvised, and instead of buns or lettuce we used baked potatoes!
    1. I bet it was delicious over baked potatoes! I will try that next time. This is one of my favorite recipes lately
  6. I just made these for the first time tonight. They are seriously amazing. Who'd have thought a few simple ingredients could make something so wonderful? We served them over organic wheat hamburger buns with sliced avocado and sauteed broccolini. I didn't have time to make the homemade ketchup, so I used my bottled organic. I cannot imagine how awesome the recipe would be with the homemade, so I'll just have to find out. You converted my hubby and my three year old to being sloppy joe fans, and I'm sitting here trying not to eat the leftovers with a spoon. Thanks for another great recipe!
    1. Thank you Kelly!! So glad you liked them! I have made them like 4 times since I posted. Love them too
  7. I really want to make these for supper tonight, however I don't have any coconut sugar on hand. Do you think I could omit it? Or replace it with something else? Thanks!
  8. Made this tonight with lettuce wraps from the garden. So good! This is definitely going to be a regular menu item. Thanks!
  9. Making these again tonight. But this time I cut the recipe in half with the holidays coming and there's only 2 of us. Always so delicious!
  10. I never comment on these things, but I couldn't help myself this time. Good lord, these were incredible! Way better than the Jamie Oliver recipe.
  11. Melissa, Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe! I lead a health and wellness life group at my church and i make healthy food to share. I was stumped on what to make for tonights group and got this email. Everyone loved it!! It really is delicious and so simple. I used brown lentils. I did cook them first and then added them to the recipe because in the past I found out the hard way that it takes them forever to cook in any kind of tomatoe sauce. That is not the case with fhe red. So thank you again Melissa for this delicious recipe!!
  12. I normally don't write reviews, but these were so dang good that's it has to be shared with the world! I love it because it was super easy, I normally have all ingredients at home and the whole family loved it. I served with lettuce and boiled potatoes since we didn't have that much lettuce. It was so good, I feel like just leaving it on the stove and grabbing a spoon full every time I walk by. Thanks know you so much for this wonderful recipe. Can't wait for your 2nd cookbook.
