Vegan Tzatziki Sauce

The other day my friend Liz from The Lemon Bowl posted a delicious looking tzatziki sauce.  I instantly wanted to try and do a veganized version.  That is where this Vegan Tzatziki Sauce came about.  Make sure you check out The Lemon Bowl for some awesome, healthy recipes! Traditionally, the recipe calls for yogurt.  I made mine with plain coconut yogurt.  For those that think the coconut will effect the taste, trust me, it won’t.  The flavors of the dill and garlic take over.

This dip is great on so many things.  Veggie burgers, raw veggies, chips, pita bread, and so much more!  This recipe also got the thumbs up from my Turkish mother in law.  If you like this, you may also enjoy my dairy free ranch dressing and my dairy free sour cream.  If  you can’t have any coconut, I bet you could tweak my dairy free sour cream to use in place of the yogurt.

Easy Baba Ganoush (Vegan)

You have to try this Easy Baba Ganoush recipe!  My husband is half Turkish, so we eat a lot of Turkish food.  So delicious!  My mother in law typically uses yogurt in her baba ganoush recipe, so we didn’t use hers.

We made this vegan baba ganoush on our own and it came out so good!  Some other Turkish recipes we have on the blog are hummus, white bean salad and red lentil soup.

Red Lentil Hummus

One of the things I love most about my job, is all the cookbook reviews I get the opportunity to do.  Today my review is of Dreena Burton’s latest cookbook Plant-Powered Families: Over 100 Kid-Tested, Whole-Foods Vegan Recipes.

index

You may already be familiar with her blog, Plant Powered Kitchen. Today I am sharing a recipe from the book.  Red Lentil Hummus.  What a great idea, right? I love lentils and hummus, but I never thought to make hummus with lentils.

Red Lentil Hummus - My Whole Food Life

Dreena has been vegan for almost 20 years.  She also raises her 3 children vegan.  In fact, Plant Powered Families has over 100 recipes that have been tested and approved by her 3 children.   I love that these recipes are easy and kid friendly.  In addition to the hummus, some of the other recipes include: Cinnamon French Toast, Pumpkin Pie Smoothie, Sneaky Chickpea Burgers, Apple Pie Chia Pudding, Vanilla Bean Chocolate Chip Cookies, Creamy Fettucine and No Bake Granola Bars.  I can’t wait to make more of the recipes myself.    In addition to the recipes, Dreena shares tips on dealing with picky eaters, packing school lunches and stocking a vegan pantry.

I am also giving away a copy to one lucky reader.  Make sure you enter via the Rafflecopter widget below the recipe!

Guest Post: Clean Eating Sesame Chickpea and Carrot Spread

Hello, guys. I’m filling in for Melissa while she spends some time with her family. My name is Olena and I am an author of Clean Eating Recipes blog – iFOODreal. Although I’m not vegan, our family’s meal focus is plant based with meat or fish once per week and limited amount of dairy products. We also strive to eat organic and local as much as we can.

As you know, when eating whole foods deli meat is not an option anymore. Frankly, even few natural and organic ones I was able to find do not fit my understanding of eating clean. That is when quick and easy spreads come in handy.

Homemade Sweet Sour Sauce

Homemade Sweet Sour Sauce.  Who doesn’t like Sweet and Sour Sauce?  Almost everyone loves it.  The problem with it, is it’s usually loaded with sugar, salt and other additives.

Well I am happy to say my homemade sweet and sour sauce recipe is only sweetened with fruit.  It’s very good and very versatile.

It makes a great dip or stir fry sauce.  You can even use it as a marinade for roasted vegetables.  If you like my Thai Peanut Sauce, you will love this one too!

I use pineapple juice to sweeten my sweet and sour sauce recipe.  I bought a pineapple and juiced it myself.  You can also blend and strain if you don’t have a juicer.

Or you can buy pineapple juice at the store.  Just make sure it’s 100% juice.  If you want the sauce a little thicker, you can add some arrowroot or cornstarch.
