Homemade Coconut Butter (Vegan)

Homemade Coconut Butter is amazing! If you have been following this blog for a while, you know that I LOVE coconut and coconut butter.

Funny thing is, I used to hate it.  Now my body craves it.  I guess it knows what is healthy. 🙂  I had an obsession with coconut butter ever since my first taste of Nutiva Organic Coconut Manna.

That stuff is the bomb and it melts in your mouth.  It can get quite pricey, so I thought I would make my own coconut butter.  It’s super easy!

So easy that I feel kind of funny calling it a recipe.  Kind of like my Homemade Peanut Butter.  Coconut butter just takes a bit longer than peanut butter, so be patient.

Coconut butter can be used a spread or a dip.  If you use it in baking it can add a richer flavor.  Coconut butter is naturally gluten free, grain free and vegan.

Recipe Notes

If you use a blender , it takes about half the time, but you have to scrape down the sides more often and it is harder to manage. I liked making it in the food processor much better. I mixed it for a minute or two and walked away. Came back to mix some more a few minutes later. I just kept repeating those steps until I saw a creamy mixture. It took about 20 minutes for me. Super easy! I store mine in a small mason jar . I love mason jars. You can never have enough. I think it should keep for a couple of weeks. I keep mine on the counter top. You can store it in the fridge, but it will harden slightly. That’s it! Enjoy!

  1. Finally got a food processor and ready to enjoy this, but after about 1/2 hr it's still just gritty coconut. I thought it would look like peanut butter!!! Doesn't taste great either, and I love all things coconut. I had to stop for today. Going to try putting it in the ninja blender tomorrow, maybe that'll work! I can't wait to try coconut butter!!
    1. It will never get 100% smooth as the store bought. They must use some high powered machines to blend it. However, it should become spreadable and taste like coconut. Did you use the dried coconut? I'm sorry it's not working out for you. :(
  2. Hi There, I have a couple of bags of unsweetened desicated coconut, would that work, I read elsewhere not to use it but thought I'd get your opinion.. Thanks Karen

    1. Hi Karen, Sorry, but it will not work. I tried it that way and it's just too moist. You can dry out the coconut in the oven and then possibly use it.
  4. Made this but wasn't really impressed, used the food processor, it took approximately 20 minutes, used what you stated in the recipe, not a lot of taste to it, and it became very hard after I let it set out for a few hours. There was no spreading it, unless I microwaved it.
    1. In the colder months, it will harden slightly. I just stick mine in a bowl of hot water and it softens right up. Sorry you were not impressed with it. :(
  5. How can I be sure of the fat content? I bought some unsweetened coconut flakes at my local farmers market and it doesn't seem to specify low-fat or not? May just have to try it...thanks!
  6. I've got unsweetened coconut on my grocery list for tomorrow! I'm very excited to try making this! Has anyone tried this with sweetened coconut and adding cocoa powder? Hmmmm......
    1. I hope you enjoy the recipe! I have made a chocolate version with unsweetened and a chocolate bar. So good! https://mywholefoodlife.com/2013/07/08/homemade-coconut-butter/
  7. Has anyone tried Bob's Red Mill Shredded Coconut (unsweetened) for this recipe? I started with it in my food processor, moved on to the Ninja and after quite sometime (about an hour) ended up with a flour like consistency...it just would not turn to butter...any suggestions? I so want to make this!
      1. This is how the bag reads - Bob's Red Mill Coconut - medium shredded, unsulfered, all natural, dried and unsweetened. Does not state low fat - fat content is 10 grams per 3 T. Have no idea what I did wrong...really want to make this. Any ideas? I love your recipes.
          1. Thank you very much for your input...I'm going to give it another try. Perhaps I will start with the Ninja this time. If it's a fail, I will have to assume it is the brand of coconut. I'm going to get this, one way or the other :)
  8. I just made it with the Ninja I picked up at a rummage sale. Worked great and only took 5 minutes. Instead of scraping the sides, I was able to shake it enough to get it down. Now to pick a recipe to use it in first...
    1. That is great! It would be awesome in this recipe. https://mywholefoodlife.com/2014/03/24/strawberry-creme-truffles/
    1. At least a week. It will get hard once it has sat, but you can easily warm it up by sticking the jar in a bowl of warm water.
  9. Hi, I love your recipes by the way. I am so excited to make this butter, I am wondering if the shredded coconut you use is dried? It seams over here all I can find is that horrible for you sweetened kind or the dried kind.
  10. i have tried a few of your recipes i am trying to move to vegan i was making buckwheat pancakes and needed some butter i had coconut and whipped it up in my food processor it took only about 8-10 min and is delish it is slightly gritty my question can you over blend, ? you have great recipies thanks
    1. It will still be slightly gritty if you are using a food processor. You can not over blend with this. Let me know how it works out in the pancakes. I am curious!
  11. This takes at least 40 min in my machine. 20 min of scraping ever 30 sec before I could possibly let it go for a few min.
        1. Fresh will definitely not work. I tried that way too. I am sorry the shredded coconut isn't working for you. :(
          1. No. Unless you want to dehydrate it first. I tried with fresh coconut, but it was not possible.
  12. I have been trying all evening to make this and have just been unsuccessful. My store didn't have unsweetened shredded coconut so I bought sweetened. Do you think that could be my problem? After a couple of hours of attempting to get this to work, I have put in the fridge with the hopes of working on it more tomorrow...
    1. Maybe? I have never tried with sweetened. I know it will not work with the low fat coconut. Did you get that by mistake?
  13. Hi Melissa! I'll start off saying I absolutely love your recipes! Easy and amazing--the way life should be. For the coconut butter can I use sweetened shredded coconut? I have some and don't want it to go to waste. Thanks!
  14. I accidentally bought reduced fat coconut. Any idea if I can get a smooth texture by adding a bit of coconut oil to it? I really want to try this recipe!
