Almond Butter Chocolate Overnight Oats

This is one of the easiest breakfasts you can make yourself.  I make 5 at a time and eat them all week.  My husband even takes them to work with him.  They travel very well.  Between the chia seeds and the cacao powder, you are getting a lot of antioxidants.

Also a lot of protein and fiber!  This will keep you full until lunchtime.   If you don’t know what cacao powder is, it is chocolate in it’s most raw form.

It can be bitter, but it’s so good for you.  I usually put a chopped medjool date in my oatmeal and it turns into a caramel overnight.  It gives just a hint of sweetness.  You can also use maple syrup.

Recipe Notes

My recipe makes a thicker oatmeal. If you like yours thinner, just add a bit more milk. Take out in the morning and enjoy. I eat mine cold right out of the fridge. You can also try my Overnight Oats in a Jar.

  1. Fantastic flavours! I always soak my oats (with a few buckwheat groats) overnight in a warm place. I add a spoon of rye flour as oats doesn't really have the phytase enzymes like rye and wheat flours that consume the phytic acid (anti-nutrient). I sometimes add a little whey and pinch sea salt too (from my recollection it helps the enzymes)... Rye has twice the amount of phytase than wheat...
  2. I just discovered your blog and love it. I made these yesterday and had them this morning. They were delicious! Thanks for the recipe. I have a jar of the apple cinnamon ones waiting for tomorrow. I bought steel cut oat groats -- not sure if that is the same as steel cut oats? It was definitely still crunchy this morning, but still good. I'm going to try rolled oats next time.
  3. I just found this recipe last week, thank you so much for posting this. I love the flavor and texture, I also noticed I have more energy and stay full longer, than eating plain instant oatmeal.
    1. No reason. It's just all I have ever used. I like Nativas as a brand as well. I use their maca powder and their cocao powder.
      1. Ok, thanks! I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was unaware of, with the coupons on amazon right now Nativas is cheaper :)
  4. Oh yum! I just got up and mixed a jar of this. I am so excited about having breakfast waiting for me tomorrow morning. I had no idea overnight oats could be make with steel cut oatmeal. Hooray for no waiting for water to boil or stirring ever five minutes! Thank you <3
  5. I have been enjoying making and eating overnight oats for a couple weeks now. I even took some on a road trip and it helped get me through the morning without getting hungry. I have a quick question about the almond milk you list as an ingredient. Do you make your own? I just read a report that an ingredient in some organic almond milk is carrageenan, which studies say is a carcinogenic. I guess I should make my own nut milk. Any suggestions?
  6. i made this but the oats did not become soft enough to chew easily.. they remained kind of hard, even after two days of soaking in the fridge. maybe because i did not use gluten-free steel cut oats? i used regular steel-cut oats.
    1. Steel cut oats still retain a little crunch. I like the crunch, but If you like a smoother oatmeal, you can use rolled oats instead.
  7. Hello, In relation to the previous comment, I normally soak steel cut oaks (I cut them myself with the food processor) overnight in warm water and they are great in the morning with fruit, chiai seeds or whatever. Would it make sense to do that first and then follow your recipe? Thanks!
  8. Thank you for your reply! I thought I was supposed to soak steel cut oats to remove various antinutrients and other things that inhibit optimal digestion of the grains. But I can see that it works for you without doing it.
  9. Hi, I just wanted to say that after our exchange on Sunday I tried this on Monday morning and it was DIVINE! Holy Molly, I couldn't believe it was breakfast!! I didn't have flax meal, so I added coconut flakes instead. I ended up soaking steel cut oats for half a day before I made the mixture and put in the fridge overnight. The oats were simply perfect. Thank you so much for this! I am now going to see what else you are eating :-)
  10. My cacao butter came in a hard block I have no idea how to use it this way. Can u help me? Would I have to break off a chunk then melt it to use ? Help :/
    1. Sounds like you bought cocoa butter instead of cocao powder. They are totally different. Cocoa butter can be used to make white chocolate, so maybe you can melt a piece down with some sweetener?
  11. I did this last night with PB2 instead of almond butter and a little bit of protein powder. I wasn't sure whether to eat it for breakfast or dessert. So yummy!
      1. Me too! Looking at this cocoa/oat/date concoction, I couldn't believe it was actually for breakfast and not for dessert. I mean, how wants eggs after this?! :-)
  12. I made this the other day and it was so good. Thank you for the recipe! I do have one question. I am new to whole foods and still learning about them and would like to know how a recipe/meal like this fits in a daily diet when it is so high in fat & calories? Do those facts not get considered b/c the ingredients are whole? I would think it would cause weight gain?! Thanks for your help!
    1. Fat is not necessarily a bad thing. Our bodies need healthy fats. I used to believe that a low fat diet was the way to go, but now I know that is not the best way. Since I started to eat clean, with a lot of healthy fats, I have actually lost weight. Sugar is the real culprit to weight gain in my opinion. Also, a diet high in whole foods and healthy fats will keep you full much longer so you will actually snack less. I hope that makes sense. :)
