Make Sure You Are Choosing the Right Cinnamon

Recently, I shared this info graphic on the health benefits of cinnamon.

At that time, it was brought to my attention that there are 2 types of cinnamon.  Ceylon and Cassia cinnamon.  Why does this matter?  Well because one (ceylon) is the “true” cinnamon that contains all the health benefits and the other (cassia) is the “fake” cinnamon with less benefits and also potentially harmful side effects.  It has to do with something called coumarin.  Cassia cinnamon has much higher amounts of coumarin than ceylon cinnamon.  When taken in large amounts, coumarin can be harmful to the liver.  So if you are heavy handed with cinnamon, your best bet is to stick with ceylon cinnamon.

So now you may ask, where do I get the celyon cinnamon?  Well I have found out about a great company called Flavor of the Earth.  They get their celyon cinnamon from Sri Lanka and grind it up in very small batches to insure the best intense flavor and freshness.  They sell the celyon cinnamon in 1lb bags like this.  You can purchase their cinnamon via this Amazon link.

Flavor of the Earth is also going to give one lucky reader a 1lb bag of ceylon cinnamon.   Open to US residents only.
