Beer Bread Recipe (Vegan)

I love Beer Bread.  I made it with white whole wheat flour.  When I was writing my post about flours, I learned that there is such a thing as white whole wheat flour.

I always thought if a flour had the word white in front of it, that it was highly refined.  Not the case with white whole wheat.  It is a whole grain from a different kind of wheat.

So I bought a bag last weekend.  First, I made my Pumpkin Spiced Waffles with it.  They came out light and fluffy, much different than when I bake with whole wheat flour.

Then, I thought it would be great to make a bread with.  So I decided on beer bread.

My first batch of beer bread did not come out well at all.  I cooked it to long and the taste was off.  So this is my second attempt and it came out great.

This bread is so easy to make.  There is not much kneading involved at all really.  I didn’t let my dough rise either.  It has a great taste and can be used as a burger bun or eaten with soup or chili.

This beer bread is:

  • vegan
  • buttery
  • rich
  • simple to make

  1. I've made beer bread numerous times and you don't need the oil!!! Just FYI for those trying to cut fat!! And you don't need to replace with anything!
  2. I measured very carefully, but my dough was runny. There was no way it would be rolled into a ball and kneading it would have been a joke. I added a whole bunch more flour & just popped it in the oven. I hope it turns out good!
      1. My dough wasn't runny or was it thick enough to knead into a ball. It was however a banana bread type consistency so I just put it in the bread pan and it turned out perfect! The entire family LOVED it! Thanks! :)
  3. My first time making bread & it was pretty easy. This has good flavor from the beer. I used a regular loaf pan and it took about an hour. Will definitely be making this again!
    1. Awesome! I love that it has the beer flavor too. I have been experimenting with different beers and they have all been yummy.
  4. I know that making your own bread is the best choice, but is there a store bread that you can recommend? I can go to Trader Joe or Whole Foods, BJ's (like a Costco) and or Sam's Club. We are currently buying Arnold's Whole Grains 100% Whole Wheat. It doesn't list High Fructose Corn Syrup but it has soybean oil and soy lecithin so it is most likely GMO. Thank you!
    1. Yes! We actually buy store bought bread. We are not big bread eaters, but we buy Food for Life Ezekiel sprouted grain bread. You can find it in a lot of stores, but you will find it for sure at Whole Foods and Trader Joes. I love their tortillas too. Look for it in the frozen section.
  5. I'm making this tomorrow!!!! Excited for my 1st attempt at fresh bread! I'm going to add in jalapeno's! (i like spicy!) Do you have any other bread recipes? I'm addicted to all your recipes!!!!! :)
    1. Not yet. I do have a pizza dough recipe and I have plans to make some herb rolls this weekend. I love the beer bread! https://mywholefoodlife.com/2013/01/20/rustic-vegan-pizza/
  6. I hope to make this tomorrow morning. I do not have any white whole wheat flour. I have all purpose flour, bread flour, and wheat flour. Should I do half and half of two kinds or just stick with one? I'd like to use at least some wheat. What would you recommend? Thanks!
  7. Is there a way to make a gluten free version of this? Could I just substitute with gluten free all purpose flour? Also, is the honey necessary? Because I'm worried it'll be too sweet.
