Homemade Coconut Butter (Vegan)

Homemade Coconut Butter is amazing! If you have been following this blog for a while, you know that I LOVE coconut and coconut butter.

Funny thing is, I used to hate it.  Now my body craves it.  I guess it knows what is healthy. 🙂  I had an obsession with coconut butter ever since my first taste of Nutiva Organic Coconut Manna.

That stuff is the bomb and it melts in your mouth.  It can get quite pricey, so I thought I would make my own coconut butter.  It’s super easy!

So easy that I feel kind of funny calling it a recipe.  Kind of like my Homemade Peanut Butter.  Coconut butter just takes a bit longer than peanut butter, so be patient.

Coconut butter can be used a spread or a dip.  If you use it in baking it can add a richer flavor.  Coconut butter is naturally gluten free, grain free and vegan.

Recipe Notes

If you use a blender , it takes about half the time, but you have to scrape down the sides more often and it is harder to manage. I liked making it in the food processor much better. I mixed it for a minute or two and walked away. Came back to mix some more a few minutes later. I just kept repeating those steps until I saw a creamy mixture. It took about 20 minutes for me. Super easy! I store mine in a small mason jar . I love mason jars. You can never have enough. I think it should keep for a couple of weeks. I keep mine on the counter top. You can store it in the fridge, but it will harden slightly. That’s it! Enjoy!

  1. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited!! I've reluctantly had to pass on a few of your recipes because I didn't have any coconut butter, but no longer. I seriously LOVE your posts!
    1. Thank you!! The first thing you should make after you have your coconut butter is my coconut almond fudge. That stuff is so good!
  2. Can you use fresh coconut shredded with a grater? My daughter loves the added bonus of the coconut water :)
    1. I tried once with fresh coconut and was unable to do it. I kept at it for at least 45 minutes, but it was still pulpy and not smooth at all. It was much easier with shredded coconut.
      1. You are right, fresh coconut doesn't work, since the coconut needs to be dried and flaked or shredded to get the correct consistency.
          1. Note to self: always read the comments first... Just waisted a lot of my time and a perfectly good coconut om this recipe :(
  3. So i have a recipe that calls for cocoa butter and beeswax to make lip balm. I wonder if coconut butter would work? Hmm. I like this. I just bought shredded coconut in bulk to make milk.
    1. I have several recipes that call for it. You can use it in place of coconut oil or butter in baking. This is one of my favorite recipes and it calls for coconut butter. https://mywholefoodlife.com/2013/06/26/coconut-almond-fudge/
  4. I made some a couple of weeks ago and had to add coconut oil to the mix. It came out oily though. You did ok with just the coconut?
    1. I made mine with just coconut. It took me about 20 minutes. I just mixed every minute or so and then allowed time for the oils in the coconut to come out naturally. If you mix and pause, mix and pause, it will not need the oil added.
  5. This is very cool. I'm going to make this when I am home from my travels. Do you have a preference as to what coconut you use? I used Red Hill shredded Coconut for most all recipes that call for or need coconut.
    1. I buy the organic shredded coconut from the Bulk Bins at Whole Foods. I also like Let's Do Organic shredded coconut.
      1. I'm curious how much bulk bin coconut costs. I know my grocery store and amazon sell the Let's Do Organic brand for about $5.xx per 16 oz bag. Thanks, if you happen to know or remember!
        1. I don't know off the top of my head. I will check next time I go to WF. I bet it's cheaper than the Let's Do Organic brand.
          1. Please do. Because of physical disability, I don't drive anymore, so it's not easy or convenient to get to a store to check. Greatly appreciated!
      2. I am trying to make the butter with Lets do Organic unsweetened shredded coconut, about 15 minutes into it the coconut seems so dry still. I am using a kitchen food processor and need to give it a break as it is getting very hot. :( hopefully it will work out, if I need to add moisture what can I add?
        1. Are you using the reduced fat or the regular? It takes about 20 minutes. Usually I stop and walk away every 5 minutes or so. This gives the coconut time to release the oils and it also gives the food processor a break.
  6. How much does this make? I have recipe that calls for 2-1/2 cups of coconut butter. Thanks for this 'recipe' :)
    1. It filled a small mason jar. Maybe 5 ounces or 1 cup? You will need to double or maybe triple the batch to get what you need for your recipe.
  7. The first I heard of it was the other day in one of you recipes. Could you eat it on a scone or toast without using it in a recipe? Thanks.
    1. If you make coconut butter, you can use it in place of butter or nut butter. It tastes great on toast and I am sure it would be great on a scone too!
  8. Mmmm... it looks so good in the picture. It's so nice to find a homemade coconut butter recipe. I think I'll try using this drizzled on top of a vegan cinnamon roll :).
  9. Can you substitute 1:1 in all recipes that call for butter? Will it cream with sugar for cookies, banana bread etc (should one harden it slightly in the fridge first)? The texture looks different than butter & baking can be so particular. Thanks!
    1. I have subbed it for coconut oil in baking, but I would think it could work well for a butter substitute. I would let it harden slightly in the fridge if using in place of butter.
  10. I love coconut manna and the oil!! Never knew there were so many uses. And, now I can make my own butter and save some money. Thank you so much!!
      1. Tastes the same, but the consistency is a bit more gritty than the manna, not much. They must have big machines to get theirs so completely smooth! The tastes is spot on though!
  11. I found this on Pinterest and walked straight to my kitchen immediately to make it. Thank you! Did yours get absolutely completely smooth? Mine is still very slightly grainy, but I've never used coconut butter so I don't know what to expect.
    1. Mine got pretty smooth. I noticed as it sat on the counter, it released even more moisture. Glad you like it!
