Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Donuts (Vegan)

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Donuts that are vegan and gluten free! Who says you can’t have donuts on a whole food diet?  Not me!  I just make them healthier.

UPDATE: This recipe originally appeared on my blog back in 2013.  I had t remove it for 3 years because it went into my first cookbook.  Well, those 3 years are up, so I’m bringing it back to the blog! Yay!

Most donuts are laden with saturated fat, processed sugars and flours.  Not these!  These are baked, not fried and made with whole grains.  Even your kids will love them.

This next picture says it all, doesn’t it?

This is my baby who eats most of her food through a tube.  Even she was scarfing these down. These would go great with a glass of my Homemade Almond Milk.

  1. I can't for the life of me find a donut pan (yay small town!) and I don't really want to buy a donut maker. Could I make these in a muffin pan instead and would I need to alter the recipe to make it work?
    1. Sure! You might need to extend the cooking time a bit, but otherwise it should work. Have you looked on Amazon? I know you can get them on there too. Please report the results on the muffins so I can tell others in the future. :)
    1. They are pretty yummy. I got my donut pan at Bed Bath and Beyond. They have them in an odd place, so ask a store member where they are. I had to do that. I have also seen them on Amazon for pretty cheap.
          1. These looked so delicious I had to try them. I don't have a donut pan so I rolled them & baked in a mini muffin pan...now I have donut holes...and delicious ones at that! TY...love your blog
    1. I get Sunspire Vegan grain sweetened chocolate chips or Enjoy Life dairy and soy free chocolate chips. The Enjoy Life are gluten free as well.
      1. Thanks so much! Your blog has been wonderful and so helpful as we start our journey to eat better. This is great.
  2. Adorable!! There's no reason to give up donuts in a healthy lifestyle. Especially ones with peanut butter and chocolate chips! I love the cakey texture of baked donuts; they beat Krispy Kreme any day in my book!
  3. What would be the nutrition information for this donut? How do you figure that information out for a recipe?
    1. Thank you! I hope you enjoy them. :) I am a sucker for almond butter and chocolate. Eat a little of both every day!
  4. Can't wait to try these....peanut butter and chocolate AND almond butter and chocolate are BOTH my weaknesses. Well, anything with chocolate really...LOL! Enjoy Life chips are my favorite but Sunspire are a close second. :) I just want to let those who have been asking know that I have seen donut pans at HomeGoods and I'm sure T.J. Maxx has them as well but Amazon is a great idea for those who live in small towns. Now I have a good reason to go to back to HomeGoods and get one!! ;) Thank you and keep these awesome recipes coming!!!
  5. What about using one of the Gluten free flours out there - 1/2 of my family has a gluten sensitivity - would that change the density or texture?
  6. We have a child with a peanut allergy. What would be a good substitution? Maybe Sunflower butter? I've never baked with it. Thanks!
  7. Aren't you worried about giving nuts to your little one? My pediatrians always said to wait until three years old to introduce peanuts.
    1. No. My doctor said after a year is fine and she has never had a reaction. She is allergic to milk, soy and sesame seeds.
      1. I'm glad that nuts work for her. That's great. I didn't realize she was allergic to milk, soy, and sesame seeds. Now I understand why you don't use cow's milk! I can't wait to try this recipe for my older children. Thanks for posting. They look awesome.
    1. You can try. I think it will work since the peanut butter will help bind them. I would try oat or brown rice flour. Coconut flour can be tricky sometimes.
        1. Coconut and almond flour won't rise like "real" flour. I use both as a partial substitute in many recipes. So if something calls for 1 cup of flour, I might use 1/4 c. almond flour/meal and 3/4 c. whole wheat pastry flour. My kids have no problem with gluten (but do have milk protein allergy), so I do this to reduce carbs/sugar and increase protein (in almond particularly). Also, if you bake "small" (think mini-muffins and cupcakes vs. large cakes) your subbed baked goods will rise better.
  8. I'd love to post this on MyFitnessPal. I am tracking my nutrition there, and you can enter recipes to calculate how much fat, sodium, calories, etc. is in the recipe. Would it be ok for me to enter the recipe there? It can either be shared with others who log their food there, or for only my reference. Thanks! :)
    1. Thank you for asking! If you want to log it for your preference that would be fine, but I would appreciate you not sharing the full recipe with others. You are more than welcome to share a link to the recipe itself. :)
      1. Thanks! Here is the nutritional info, for anyone who is curious, like me :) The number below are, Calories, Carbs, Fat, Protein, Sodium, Sugar Per Serving: 181 34 4 6 77 10 Great balanced yumminess :)
  9. Used 1c whole wheat and 1c white flour because I couldn't find the white whole wheat and it came out great muffin style.
