Homemade Coconut Butter (Vegan)

Homemade Coconut Butter is amazing! If you have been following this blog for a while, you know that I LOVE coconut and coconut butter.

Funny thing is, I used to hate it.  Now my body craves it.  I guess it knows what is healthy. 🙂  I had an obsession with coconut butter ever since my first taste of Nutiva Organic Coconut Manna.

That stuff is the bomb and it melts in your mouth.  It can get quite pricey, so I thought I would make my own coconut butter.  It’s super easy!

So easy that I feel kind of funny calling it a recipe.  Kind of like my Homemade Peanut Butter.  Coconut butter just takes a bit longer than peanut butter, so be patient.

Coconut butter can be used a spread or a dip.  If you use it in baking it can add a richer flavor.  Coconut butter is naturally gluten free, grain free and vegan.

Recipe Notes

If you use a blender , it takes about half the time, but you have to scrape down the sides more often and it is harder to manage. I liked making it in the food processor much better. I mixed it for a minute or two and walked away. Came back to mix some more a few minutes later. I just kept repeating those steps until I saw a creamy mixture. It took about 20 minutes for me. Super easy! I store mine in a small mason jar . I love mason jars. You can never have enough. I think it should keep for a couple of weeks. I keep mine on the counter top. You can store it in the fridge, but it will harden slightly. That’s it! Enjoy!

  1. This is so awesone! I'm going to have to add unsweetened coconut to my staples list. I've passed up some recipes because I haven't seen this in any of the stores I shop. I love coconut it will be fun experimenting with this.
  2. I think if you heat the coconut before starting it would come together quicker. It seems like the coconut starts binding after the heated motor heats it. I may have stopped too soon. Can it get as smooth as peanut butter, or is it grainy?
    1. It gets almost as smooth as peanut butter. A little thinner though. It is slightly grainy, but it gets smoother as it sits on the counter. I think the oils release more.
  3. Do you happen to know if dehydrated unsweetened coconut flakes would work for this? I have a huge bag of them that I would like to use up. Thanks, love all your recipes!!
    1. I use the dried, shredded unsweetened. The full fat one though. Not sure if it works with reduced fat shredded coconut. I tried once with fresh, but I could never get it to work.
      1. Hi! I was in the process of making this and it had been about an hour into it (and it was not all smooth) so I started scrolling down through comments! Turns out I was using reduced fat coconut...so for the record, it does not work well :) I can't wait to go get the full fat so I can make this!!!

  6. would love recipe for coconut recipes I can make and seal in mason jars in hot water baths to seal for gifts like regular jelly. only with coconut
  7. is this much healthier than normal butter made with milk? if so, how? just interested, will definitely try as I love coconut, just wondered what the health benefits are? :)
    1. It is just different. Some would say it's no healthier and others would say it's healthier. I am not totally sure of the answer to that one. I prefer it since I don't eat dairy and it can be used in place of butter in many cases. If you like the flavor of coconut, you will probably enjoy this recipe. :) I hope that helps a bit!
  8. Do you think you could freeze the coconut butter, I don't use mine up very fast. Trying not to waste so much, I'm cooking for one.
  9. i just made your recipe for Homemade Coconut Butter...I first used my food processor..and followed instructions for scraping and blending for about 20min then found it to be grainy so I poured it onto my Vitamix and blended for about a minute ...I still find it to be a little grainy and with a dry pasty taste...The Coconut I used was Organic Traditions Shredded Coconut...Maybe the fat content is not high enough...or is this how it is suppose to be as I have never tried coconut butter before this..Thank you for sharing all that you do on your site...I enjoy reading it and trying out your recipes
    1. Because it's not processed on heavy machinery, it will never get as super fine as store bought. I can get it pretty smooth in my vitamix, but it still has a slightly grainy texture. I use the homemade coconut butter in a lot of my dessert recipes where the graininess is not really noticeable.
      1. Thank you for letting me know...I have never tried coconut butter until making this so I had nothing to compare it to...I did however like it..Thank you again
  10. This will be my homemade Christmas gift this year. Awesome! I would like to know how long it will last. I know you mentioned a few weeks but has anyone tested, etc. just so I can put on gift tag.
